M1 - The Crab Nebula
Object: M1 - The Crab Nebula, 22 Kalliope, 566 Stereoskopia Date: September 16, 2001 Exposure: 60 Min Film: Kodak Ektachrome E200 Equipment: 10" f/10 Meade OTA w/Lumicon GEG at f/7.5, Losmandy G-11, Nikon F 35mm camera body. Guiding: ST-4 (A2). Hardware & Software: HP S20xi film scanner, Hamrick Software's VueScan (7.1.16), The images were processed with curves and cropped using Picture Window. The E200 was supposed to be push processed 2 stops but was was not at all. This made the processing if the image a problem. Info: M1, also known as the Crab Nebula is the most famous known supernova remnant. First noted on July 4, 1054 A.D. by Chinese astronomers. It is some 6300 light yeras away. A surprise in the image was that asteriods 22 Kalliope and 566 Stereoskopia are also visible as two streaks near M1, one at "3 o'clock" and the other at "4 o'clock". 22 Kalliope made news recently when a "tiny" asteriod was found orbiting it.
